Get your content right first: The most important thing to get right at the beginning is to get your content right. Put your focus on selling yourself through your accomplishments, and don’t let your resume get in the way of that. Get your money right first: This is a big one. Put your most recent jobs first, unless you have great experience in that field.
I didn’t have to change my content based on the industry – I didn’t have to make it more “clean” or “professional” just because it was beyond my ability to edit. I could have focused on the important stuff (skills, education, experience) and I could have kept it really simple. That is the **truth** and I am sorry for any confusion.
It’s simple, easy to understand, and straight to the point. From the looks of it, it’s got everyone from an HR manager to a high-schooler at a restaurant (not a place you want to go) in mind. You’ve got your “key skills” and your “personal profile” in the header.
It allowed me to fit all the relevant information on one page while also fitting all the important details into less than half of that. I was able to condense everything into a single column while still providing a clear picture of everything I’ve done. I’ve taken advantage of every single one of CVs’ greatest strengths: their ability to pack a lot of information into a small area.
I didn’t have a huge amount of experience, but I applied to every relevant job I could find. I got a couple interviews, but nothing came from those. In the past I was always told that a resume should never be more than a page. Well I was confused when I graduated and found myself with over a decade of work experience and not even a single related job position listed. That’s when I realized I needed a resume makeover. I was then told that a resume should be chronological and that my current format was not conducive to being hired.
