I was struggling to write my summary, because I have never been good at selling myself.
Up until now I had no idea how to write a resume. After reading a post on How to Optimize Your Resume for a Job Posting, I followed all the advice and created a resume template that works well for me.
I got it down to one page. I dropped from two full pages to one. I also added tons of examples, tips, and tricks I picked up from all my other job hunting adventures. I think it worked really well.I’m a little concerned that if I just leave it as one page, it’s going to be really short.
I used to always put the job description in the resume, and then list my job duties in bullet points. That has gotten me nowhere. Instead, I list the company and then give a brief description of what I did for that company. That way, the reader gets a better picture of what the company is and what their needs are.
I had a hard time trying to figure out how to make my resume look good, and now I can just focus on content.
It looks clean, organized and (dare I say it) stylish. My old resume was, quite frankly, a mess. It was a mess of different formatting, different text sizes and different font types. My new resume is simple and clean. It’s easy to read and it looks good. I’m in the IT field, if that makes a difference.

I want you to look at it and say to yourself “That is not how I think a resume should look.
I’m not going to say it was the smartest decision I’ve ever made because I can’t be objective on myself. I can say it was the smartest decision I’ve ever made because I reduced my unemployment rate by 15 percentage points within the first 6 months after I got this job. That’s a pretty good return on my investment, IMO.
